Diagnosis
If your physician suspects the presence of sleep apnea, they will probably request a diagnostic evaluation of your sleep.
The polysomnography (PSG) is a sleep study that helps doctors assess whether or not someone has a sleep disorder. PSGs are used to diagnose sleep apnea as well as other sleep disorders, and they provide extensive information about a person's physiological activity during sleep.
For a PSG, a person typically spends one or two nights in a sleep lab, the first night for the diagnostic study and the second for CPAP adjustment, if a CPAP is prescribed.
Alternatively, home-based diagnosis is available in some countries (including Australia). This involves a small portable device that is designed for convenient use in the home, ensuring fast and accurate results.
Following the overnight study, your family doctor, with a specialist's input, will determine whether you need to be prescribed CPAP treatment.
The sleep specialist will then work with you, and your family doctor, to ensure you receive the best treatment options and long term care and support.
